Abstract
Due to its geographical conditions, the historical region of Tabaristan has had stable cultural characteristics throughout history. Despite the importance of the cultural history of the Tabaristan region and the historical fame of its carpets and weaves, little research has been done on the weaving motifs of this historical region. In this research, an attempt has been made to analyze some of the traditional handwoven motifs in the geographical area of Old Tabaristan with descriptive and analytical methods in order to discover their semantic layers and their ritual and cultural roots. The method of collecting information for collecting motifs, in the field, and information related to the pretext and analysis, was obtained through documentary studies. Among more than one hundred plant, animal and geometric motifs in the traditional weaves of Tabaristan, a large number of motifs clearly represent national, religious and historical symbols. Qualitative analysis and comparative interpretation of motifs was done by using the explicit meanings of the motifs, reading its symbolic concepts and comparing with examples and historical works, and the intertextual approach was used as a research approach. The application of intertextuality theory in the analysis of motifs confirms the existence of pre-Islamic religious beliefs in the handwoven motifs of Tabaristan. The results show that there are three general concepts: 1- consecration and praise of divine power, 2- seeking blessings, being auspicious. and protection, 3- respect and commemoration, in Tabaristan's hand-woven motifs, are ancient religious and ritual beliefs that have been manifested in hand-woven fabrics with a symbolic expression. The use of Naqshma of Tabaristan under the influence of ancient religious traditions and beliefs continued until after Islam in Alborz highlands. The themes related to sanctification, faith in God and the ritual of sealing are the meanings hidden in the motifs, which have created a connection with nature and existence in the hands of weavers as a spiritual matter.
