Abstract

This research is based on the study of luster tiles of Shah Yalman shrine in Kashan. In the fall of 2004, during a fire in the shrine of Shah Yalman, a set of luster tiles that were installed on the tomb, were found. These tiles almost damaged a lot and for more protection the transferred to the Kashan heritage office. So far, no information has been provided about these tiles or they have not been displayed anywhere. Due to the high value of the tiles, we studied them in terms of decorations and applied techniques. Since these tiles do not have the manufacturer's signature, we tried to compare them with similar works with signatures. In this research, the following questions have been addressed: 1- Do the luster tiles obtained belong to this building or were they brought here from another place? 2- From the point of view of stylistics, which potter (or potters) can the luster tiles under study, be attributed to? The authors studied the luster tiles of the Shah Yalman shrine with a descriptive-comparative method. The whole number of luster tiles found from this shrine is seventeen and in two forms, square and rectangular. But in this article, we studied just the square form of these tiles which are eleven. Detailed documentation includes photography and pattern design, also part of the information is collected from library. In terms of appearance, the newly renovated luster tiles are very similar to the tiles of other holy places, including the shrine of Imam Reza. The findings of this research show that these tiles probably did not belong to the shrine of Shah Yalman and had another use other than tombstones, but later they were installed as tombstones in this building. From this research, we also find out that the studied luster tiles have the same designer or designers as the works in other buildings
