Abstract

Zeroavand Tepe (2) located in Dawoodabad city is considered among the important Sassanid Tepes in the archeological studies of the central plateau of the country, which has been excavated in 2022. During a season of excavation in this ancient tepe, cultural finds such as pottery were found. And due to the importance of pottery and its role in archaeological studies, this cultural material was studied in this article. Therefore, for this research, 86 pieces of pottery from the Sassanid period, out of 918 pieces of pottery obtained from the excavation, were selected for study. At first, these potteries were classified and typified based on technical specifications and shape. This research has a fundamental quiddity with a descriptive-analytical approach and the procedure method of this research has two parts: library and field studies (pottery). The main purpose of this article is the quantitative and qualitative study of Sassanid pottery in Zarovand2 tepe, Then, their classification, typology and relative chronology, and the comparative chronology and explanation of cultural connections with the adjacent regions has been done based on comparative studies of pottery. The results of the research showed that among the shapes identified among the pottery of Zeroavand tepe (2), in order of abundance, they include jars, bowls, pots, plates, and trays, and the most common decorative motifs of pottery are carved motifs. Most of the potteries is suitable for firing and shows the temperature control of the kiln for firing pottery. Also, a comparative comparison showed that, while having some native-local characteristics, the pottery of this area is similar to areas such as Sirm Shah. , Yazdgerd qaleh, Gori qaleh, Veliran, Mahor Siah, and Horasgan, Berdankun., Sassanid sites identified in Zanjan, North Khuzestan and Shushtar Mianab. And the site of Abu Sharifah in Iraq is comparable and in addition to regional characteristics, it has the most similarities with the cultural areas of the west and the central plateau of Iran.
