Abstract

The troglodytic complex of Robāt-e Āghāj, which is created in the heart of a 50-metre hill in height, is one of the important historical sites in Khomeyn County. The first season of archaeological excavations of the site carried out in 2015. The achievements of these excavations were different architectural spaces and various archaeological findings. The highest frequency of findings identified in this site are various types of unglazed and glazed potteries from the Islamic era. A diverse range of potteries, including simple unglazed potteries, unglazed potteries with pressure patterns, potteries with incised and excised motifs, potteries with molded motifs, monochromatic glazed potteries, blue-and-white porcelain, lusterware and enamelware has been identified from the site. The importance of dealing with these findings is because all the potteries obtained from the site is related to the Islamic Middle Ages and that they were produced and used in the same period. By this reason, by conducting the present study, it is possible to provide a comparative source in the field of pottery of this period in Markazi Province and even Iran. Therefore, the most important question of the present study is in the field of comparative chronology of these potteries and their possible production centers. The current study method is descriptive-comparative and the technique of information gathering is based on field surveys and desk research. As a result of the present study, it was found that most of the potteries of the site probably belongs to the period between 6th and 7th century AH. Also, some of these types of pottery have many similarities with ones of some production centers such as Zolf Ābād, Moshkoye, Kāshān and Ray, which are likely to have been exported from these centers to Khomeyn, as archaeological studies have confirmed this claim. In addition, they have many similarities with similar examples in some historical sites such as troglodytic of Tahyaq-e Khomeyn, Sāmen-e Malāyer and Arzān Fud in Hamadān.
