Typology and chronology of the pottery of the ancient city of Qaen based on archaeological excavations

Abstract

Qaen is one of the important cities of Quhistan (South Khorasan) which has had many ups and downs during the Islamic period. Although it is mentioned many times in the chronicles. However, for accurate information about the location of the old city of Qaen, excavations have been carried out. Research on the pottery obtained from the excavations of 2016 to 2012 by Rajab Ali Labbaf provides archaeologists with valuable information about the establishment and different eras of the ancient city of Qain.The purpose of this Analytical method research was to identify the types of pottery in the region, to identify the settlement sequence of the ancient city of Qaen and how Qaen's trans-regional connections with other regions.Based on this, at first 177 pieces of pottery obtained from excavations were classified and then 55 pieces of pottery indicative of typology and chronology were selected and studied and analyzed. The results obtained based on the studies conducted on the pottery show that the city of Qaen was established in the early Islamic centuries until the middle of the Safavid period, and the Seljuk period is considered as the golden period.In terms of the quality of pottery, this region used to produce pottery like other important pottery centers of Iran. However, the absence of golden potteries, Silhutu and Enamel pottery indicates the lack of expertise of Qaen potters in the production of these types of pottery. Also, the city of Qaen has had the most trans-regional connections with regions such as Khorasan, Sistan and JazmuriQaen was established in the early Islamic centuries until the middle of the Safavid period, and the Seljuk period is considered as the golden period.In terms of the quality of pottery, this region used to produce pottery like other important pottery centers of Iran.
