Abstract

After the war of Marv, Shah Ismail I handed over the government of this region to Tahmasb Mirza, one of his princes, to control the situation in the eastern regions and prevent further Uzbakan attacks. and taxes were different for each region. At the end of Shah Ismail's reign, the economic-political disorder caused drastic tax changes in the eastern regions and Estrabad, and this practice resulted in severe dissatisfaction among the people. Shah Ismail tried to control the situation by changing the ruler of Khorasan and replacing him with Sam Mirza. For this purpose, re-minting was applied to the coins of Shah Ismail in the Estrabad Mint. These coins are proof of the economic-political situation of the region because surcharge coins are minted at special times and when the economic situation is unfavorable. In the studied coins, the surcharge is on the coins of Shah Ismail minted in 927 A.H. in the Estrabad region. Therefore, the question raised in this research is: What is the economic-political importance of the city of Estrabad in the period of 927 AH, and what was the reason for minting Surcharge coins? For this purpose, the authors have tried to answer the above question by using numismatics as a reliable historical source, using a descriptive-analytical and historical method, and the required information was obtained through library studies and a visit to the Astan Quds Razavi Museum to directly examine the coins and 12 Surcharge coins minted in Estrabad were selected from Astan Quds Razavi Museum. According to the conducted research, it was found that the minting of surcharge coins in Estrabad is based solely on political interests and control of nearby cities and the purpose of minting such coins is to announce the change of the ruler of Khorasan and to prevent economic stagnation in the commercial areas of the Silk Road.
