The Study of the Prehistoric Ritual of Siavash Mourning with the Help of Archaeological Documents of the Sogdiana Region with the Approach of Iconology

Abstract

Sogdiana region is one of the important historical centers in the geographical area of ancient Iran. The study of this area has attracted the attention of researchers from various aspects of archeology. It is obvious that the religious culture of this region and its relationship with its pictorial traditions are of double importance. Meanwhile, the fate of Siavash is one of the most important of these religious narratives, and traces of many ancient rituals related to mourning can be recognized in it. Apart from the religious-literary sources part of our past image tradition also deals with this image, the semantic and religious roots of this ritual can be examined through these images. In this article, by referring to the Panjkent wall painting attributed to Siavash mourning, an attempt has been made to study this ritual as a historical-cultural image. For this purpose, Irwin Panofsky's iconology method has been used. This method is effective in archaeological studies, history of art and image, and in the present study, it helps us to "description", "analysis" and "interpretation" of this wall painting and its comparison with other visual documents related to a new reading of the concept of mourning. let's find

The purpose of the current research is to answer this main question: "In what way was the presence of the concept of mourning and its continuation in the history and culture of Iranian man?". The purpose of this question is primarily to study the historical-meaning of mourning and to trace the continuity of this idea through the images related to it. The present study, focusing on the meaning and historical origin of mourning through images, allows us to study the motifs and gestures of the figures and thus consider a wider perspective. This research is descriptive-analytical based on the fundamental goal and from the point of view of the method. The primary data of the current research also includes visual and textual sources.
