Abstract

The portal is one of the important components of the entrance of the historical houses of Yazd city, which contains a major part of the executed decorations. This component was located above the entrance door and is one of the first spaces that customers encounter. Although there have been valuable activities about the residential architecture of Yazd, but so far no attention has been paid to the entrance spaces of a house. This article tries to investigate the historical houses of Yazd city with a descriptive-analytical method. The questions raised are: 1. What materials were used for the construction and decoration of the portals? 2. What motifs were used to decorate the portals? In order to answer these questions, the localities of the historical context of Yazd city were surveyed and necessary field documents were collected and then the required information was entered in special tables. Studies show that brick is the most important element used in the construction and decoration of portals. After that, we can mention plaster, which was used both as a mortar and as a decorative element. Even though the tile has a functional aspect, its decorative aspect is more prominent. Also, despite the existence of clay decorations in the architectural history of Yazd city, this element has been used only as mortar. Other materials such as brick kiln welding, sand and cement mortar and crushed stone have also been used in limited cases. A large amount of decoration is made up of geometric patterns, which are generally created by bricks. After that, there are plant motifs, which, in addition to bricks, are also made of plaster. In the next order, writing is placed, mostly tiles and plaster are used, and in a few cases, stones and bricks are used. It is also possible to mention the columns and centauri decorations that are influenced by the western culture and few examples can be seen.
