Abstract

In the architectural history of the Islamic period, the building of the mosque has been considered one of the important factors in the formation and expansion of cities and villages due to its religious characteristics. Jokhah Old Mosque is one of the important architectural buildings of the Islamic period of Jokhah village near Tabas. In relation to this building, few studies have been done by the cultural heritage organization to record, date and describe it, although no coherent study has been done regarding its design, structure and dating. Since there is no mention of this mosque in any of the sources and texts of the Islamic period, the formal, spatial and technological characteristics of its architectural structure have been researched to identify this building.

With the help of field studies and the study of the physical elements of the building as well as the comparison of comparative examples, this research aims to introduce the structural spaces of the mosque, historical periodization and physical analysis of its formal and spatial elements. The method of this research is descriptive-analytical. The research approach and its description includes field investigation and observation of the mosque building. The comparative studies of this research were determined based on library sources and with the help of interpretation of the findings, the characteristics and principles of architecture used in this building. In the process of research, by analyzing the features of the design and other spaces with other mosques of the middle Islamic period, the similarity, changes and transformations of the spatial structure have been qualitatively considered. The findings of the research show that this building was originally built with two porches during the middle centuries, and then in the later centuries, a third porch was added to it, and it caused changes in the structure of the plan and its spaces.
