Metal rhytons were among the pre-Islamic animal vessels, but no comprehensive studies have been conducted on their manufacturing and decoration methods. The found examples of these vessels come in various forms, but the general form of rhytons consisted of two parts; the opening was cylindrical or conical, which was used to pour liquids, and the front part was made in the shape of an animal's head.Rhytons were considered courtly luxury items that were used in special and ritual ceremonies. In some examples, these objects were merely decorative and did not have a consumer function, but in many examples, liquids were poured from a cylindrical or conical opening and could be drunk through the mouth of the animal or the bottom of the container. The peak period of metal rhyton making was during the Achaemenid and Sasanian eras, and many examples of these works are preserved in various collections inside and outside Iran. This research aims to identify and study the methods of making and decorating rhytons related to the Sassanid period, with emphasis on the rhyton from the Arthur Sackler collection. The descriptive-analytical research approach was based on library and field studies, including the making of similar rhytons in metalworking workshops. The data collection method was library-based and the authors recorded their observations and experiences. The results of this study revealed that the method of making and decorating these rhytons was by cold hammering on a metal body, which was made in several pieces and after the surface was made, these parts were soldered together.
The most important metal used in the manufacture of Sasanian rhytons was silver, which was gold-plated using gold inlays in the specified areas. Also, the ideological stability of the Sasanian period played a fundamental role in depicting the concepts of power and victory in the rhytons of the Sasanian realm and its neighboring states.
