The book "Description of the Traveling Places of the Iraqis" by Motraqchi is an illustrated manuscript and image from the 10th century AH that narrates the route of the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman's campaign in relation to the military and state goals of the Ottoman Empire. The aim of the present study is to examine and analyze the visual features of Motraqchi's depiction of Khoy and to assess its capacity to recognize architectural elements and the historical context of the city during the Safavid period. Accordingly, the study answers two questions: First, what visual features are used to depict architectural and building elements in Motraqchi's depiction of Khoy? Second, how can we achieve the recognition and typology of the elements of the historical context of the city of Khoy during the Safavid period by analyzing these features? The research method is historical-interpretive with a descriptive-analytical approach, and the data were collected and analyzed using library resources, historical documents, and a comparative study of Motraqchi's depiction. The research findings in response to the first question show that Motraqchi used components such as spatial organization, the way buildings are located, the scale and relative proportion of elements, vegetation, communication routes, the orientation of buildings, and the visual characteristics of architecture in his depiction of Khoy. In response to the second question, the analysis of these components shows that the drawing, in addition to its artistic and visual value, has a significant capacity for recognizing and classifying architectural elements and parts of the physical structure of the historical context of Khoy during the Safavid period. Accordingly, Motraqchi's drawing can be used as a complementary visual source in the historical and architectural study of the city of Khoy.
